Victorian England is a place in which the steam engine is state-of-the-art technology and powered flight is just a dream. Mankind is helpless against the killing machines from Mars, and soon the survivors are left living in a new stone age.

    I have loved this story for many years, and am delighted it's available for IPhone. BUT the blurb is very misleading. H. G. Wells was an english writer, and the story is set in England, therefore cannot be classed as an American classic!

    I highly recommend reading this book, I loved it. I was a little worried the writing might be dated but not at The setting is London in Victorian times. The story is about invasion, the twist is that the invaders are Martian. Anyone interested in reading the original inspiration for the War of the Worlds films and TV series will not be disappointed. When you read the story you will recognise scenes in the films, and more. Don't worry about the setting being in Victorian times, Alien technology has no time period. Enjoy

    This is my favourite book of all time, an awesome read. The story has haunted me since I was a child and even after reading this time and time again, it never fails to draw you into the bleak reality of the callamity facing mankind. Cannot rate this highly enough.
