Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck is remembered as one of the greatest and best-loved American writers of the twentieth century. During the 1930s, his works included The Red Pony, Pastures of Heaven, Tortilla Flat, In Dubious Battle, and Of Mice and Men. The Grapes of Wrath, published in 1939, earned him a Pulitzer Prize. In 1962, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

    One of the truly great books of modern literature. A masterful account of most parts of the United States and its different peoples and cultures,all told in splendidly readable and literate prose and with great humour, humanity and wisdom.

    First read this about 20 years ago and upon finishing it I had it in mind to pack up my things there and then, head to the States and go exploring...ok, I've not got round to it yet but maybe after re-reading this maybe that feeling will strike again and I'll get my backside in gear. For me this is on a par with Bryson's A Walk in the Woods for invoking an attractive image of parts of the USA, maybe one day soon I'll follow in their footsteps...

    I have read all of Steinbeck's books and travelled many of the same roads but this is my favourite. All those with whom I have shared it enjoyed it as well. It is one of Americas best authors at his finest.
